It’s been snowing all day. I didn’t expect it, so when I woke and saw the chunky flakes floating around it just felt like the right thing to do was to open all the curtains and situate myself back in bed with a book. Not Instagram, not emails, not the damn news. A book and a cat’s belly and my babe dreaming next to me.

Last year I committed to reading again as a way to bring me back around to myself. While I found internet media to be the easiest distraction during the first unbearable months of the grieving process because of its immediacy, consuming media ultimately felt passive and wasteful and depressing. We all feel this right? Reading takes so much more focus these days with infinite mindless entertainment at our fingertips than it did in my Lit major days. Why read 100-year-old words when there are memes afoot?! Why bring a book on the subway when there is underground WiFi now?! .

Well, because reading is active, not passive. You have to use your imagination. Also, it improves memory, empathy, vocabulary, reduces stress and prevents your brain from rotting away as quickly 🙃(your brain deteriorates as you age and the only thing you can do about it is slow the process by challenging yourself regularly! READ! Run! Don’t be such a Netflix zombie!) 🧠📚 .

These are the 12 I read in 2018. I’d like to double that this year (since I won’t be living out of a small backpack for 3 months this go around). What did you guys read last year?! PLZ SHARE ALL YOUR FAV TITLES! Thanks 🙏🏼❤️
